Get involved without getting in the pool

26 May 2025

Not everyone involved in swimming wears a cap and goggles. Behind every squad, meet and championship are the people who make it possible. You don’t need a swimming background to be one of them. Here’s how you can support the sport on your terms, in ways that suit your skills, time and interests.

Support at club level

Most clubs are volunteer-run. That includes coaching support, fundraising, admin, events, uniforms, and more. Ask your club where help is needed. Common areas include:

  • Club BBQs or fundraising stalls
  • Uniform orders and merchandise
  • Team marshalling at club nights
  • Helping new families feel welcome
  • Coordinating social events
  • Joining the club committee

You don’t need to commit to everything. Start with one job.

Volunteer at competitions

Meets rely on volunteers from all clubs. You don’t need experience - just willingness. Typical roles include:

  • Timekeeping
  • Runner (delivering results or paperwork)
  • Marshalling
  • Announcer or speaker support
  • Setting up signage or tents
  • Pack down after the meet

Most roles are guided on the day. You’ll be paired with someone who can show you what to do.

Become a technical official

Technical officials are the ones who keep the sport fair and consistent. This includes:

  • Starters
  • Judges of stroke
  • Check starters and inspectors
  • Referees

Training is free, and many roles can be done poolside while your swimmer competes. It’s a great way to learn the sport in detail and stay close to the action. Most officials begin with the Inspector of Turns qualification and build from there. Your club or SwimmingSA can help you get started.

Join the event crew

SwimmingSA delivers meets across the season and always needs extra hands. Event volunteers help with:

  • Ticketing and entry
  • Accreditation
  • Results and information desks
  • Medal presentations
  • Media

If you’re organised, practical, or just enjoy being part of an energetic team, this is a good place to start. Volunteering at these events gives you a big-picture view of the sport.

Bring your own skill set

Your background might be in marketing, design, operations, tech, education or business. Every club and event benefits from fresh thinking and professional skill. You might help by:

  • Building a club website
  • Creating a volunteer rostering system
  • Running a welcome night for new families
  • Helping with sponsor pitches or grant writing

If you see a gap, offer to fill it. Most ideas are welcome.

Make it work for you

Volunteering in swimming doesn’t have to mean weekly committee meetings. Many roles are casual, seasonal, or one-off. If you only want to help for a few hours at a local carnival, that’s fine. If you’re keen to take on more, there are pathways to do that too. There’s no one way to be involved. The point is, there’s space for you.
