'The Voice of Swimming' recieves SA Premier's Award

07 March 2025

Peter Graham’s contribution to swimming is nothing short of remarkable. He is known, quite literally, as the Voice of Swimming - not just in South Australia, but across Australia and around the world.

As a poolside announcer at the highest levels of international swimming, Peter has been present for some of the sport’s biggest moments. In fact, he is the only non-technical pool deck official that World Aquatics has invited to major swim meets—a testament to his knowledge, professionalism, and deep passion for the sport.

A Journey That Began at Home

Peter’s story starts much closer to home. In 1981, when his family moved from Mount Gambier to Adelaide and joined the Henley and Grange Swimming Club, he was approached to take on the role of club announcer at their weekly time trials. Little did they know, this simple opportunity would launch a career that would take Peter all the way to the world stage.

Peter’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. One of his proudest moments came in 2000 when he called the action at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sydney. But his impact didn’t stop there - he went on to announce at Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, as well as at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne 2006 and Delhi 2010.

Yet, no matter where he was in the world, Peter never forgot his roots. He has travelled across South Australia, spending countless summers at country club carnivals, giving his time, voice, and passion to local swimming communities.

A Commitment to Excellence

Peter is meticulous in his research, ensuring that whether it was a young child stepping up for their very first race or a world-class athlete preparing for Olympic gold, every swimmer received the same energy, respect, and excitement. In Peter’s eyes, every race is special.

Beyond the microphone, Peter has given so much to the sport. He has served as a board director and chair, earning life membership with SwimmingSA in 2008 and later being recognised with life membership of Swimming Australia in 2009.

Peter’s impact is simply enormous. His generosity is unmatched. His voice is iconic.

On behalf of SwimmingSA and the Premier of South Australia, we extend our deepest gratitude to Peter for everything he has done for swimming - for over 35 years of passion, dedication, and unwavering support for our sport. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of swimmers and sports enthusiasts.
