Sarah Ryan OAM inducted into the SA Sport Hall of Fame

On February 21, 2025, at Adelaide Oval, Sarah Ryan was officially inducted into the South Australian Sport Hall of Fame. The recognition cements her legacy as one of South Australia’s most accomplished athletes, celebrating her remarkable contributions to the sport of Swimming. Fellow Sport SA Hall of Fame Swimmers Phil Rogers and Matt Cowdrey were in attended the event, to congratulate Sarah on her recognition.

Sarah Ryan made an indelible mark on Australian swimming, particularly as a sprint freestyler. A fierce competitor and dedicated athlete, she played a pivotal role in securing relay medals for Australia at three consecutive Olympic Games: the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and the 2004 Athens Olympics. Her performances helped elevate the Australian women’s 4x100m freestyle team to the top of the world rankings, showcasing not only her speed but also her unwavering team spirit.

Born and raised in Adelaide, Sarah’s passion for swimming was evident from a young age. She attended Mount Carmel College, where her talent in the pool quickly set her apart. In 1993, she earned a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport, a milestone that launched her international swimming career. Soon after, she was selected as a member of the Australian Swimming Team, embarking on a journey that would see her compete among the world’s best athletes.

While her days of competitive swimming are behind her, Sarah’s connection to the sport remains strong.
