Jump in to South Australia’s most unexpected swim spot

05 February 2025

At SwimmingSA, we’re all about getting in the water, anywhere and everywhere - whether that’s in a pool, an ocean, or a spot so unique it makes you stop and say, wait… you can swim there? That’s exactly the case with Little Blue Lake, a volcanic sinkhole just outside of Mount Gambier that’s been drawing swimmers, thrill-seekers, and adventurers for generations.

Once an underground cave, it collapsed over time to create what is now one of South Australia’s most unexpected and spectacular swimming destinations. And the best part? It’s open for anyone to take the plunge.

Most of us are used to diving off blocks, turning at the wall, or catching waves at the beach - but here, swimming is completely raw and natural. Little Blue Lake isn’t lined with tiles, there’s no lane ropes, and the only crowd is the one watching from the cliffs.

It’s a true open-water experience, with deep, cool water year-round that challenges even the strongest swimmers. A floating pontoon and staircase offer an easy way into the water, letting you take your time and ease into the swim.

And once you’re in? It’s pure magic. The feeling of floating in such a deep, clear space, surrounded by limestone walls, is unlike anything else.

At SwimmingSA, we love seeing swimmers take on new challenges, experience different environments, and embrace the water in all its forms. Whether you’re a club swimmer, open-water enthusiast, or just someone who loves a good swim, Little Blue Lake is a must-visit.

So, who’s up for it? Pack your swimmers, round up your training buddies, and dive into one of SA’s most unexpected swim spots. Don’t forget to tag us in your swim, we love seeing where the water takes you!
